COURSE DETAILS

The British Gravel Championships course is a true test of strength, endurance and race craft, featuring a demanding circuit with approximately 700m of climbing per lap. A couple of major climbs will provide the key battlegrounds, creating natural selection points and rewarding riders who can repeatedly produce power deep into the race.

Away from the climbs, riders will be treated to long stretches of super-fast velvet gravel, allowing for high speeds and smooth, flowing racing. The rougher terrain is largely reserved for the ascents, where chunks of looser gravel and forestry-road surfaces add an extra challenge and place a premium on line choice and traction.

Surface Breakdown

  • 50% Velvet Gravel – smooth, fast and flowing.

  • 40% Standard Forestry Roads – hard-packed and consistently raceable.

  • 10% Chunky Gravel – predominantly found on the climbing sections.

With relentless climbing, rapid gravel sectors and enough technical variation to keep riders focused, this is a championship course designed to reward the strongest and most complete gravel racers.

Following the success of hosting the first official Scottish National Gravel Championships, we are delighted to bring the first ever British National Gravel Championships to Ae Forest on 22–23 August.

Nestled in the heart of the Southern Uplands, Ae Forest is one of the UK’s premier riding destinations. Its vast network of fast forest roads, flowing gravel tracks and technical off-road sections creates racing that is challenging, dynamic and relentlessly engaging. Long climbs, sweeping descents and constantly changing surfaces provide the ideal terrain on which to crown Britain’s first national gravel champions.

This landmark event is about far more than racing. Across the weekend, Ae Forest will host a full gravel festival atmosphere, with live music, talks, workshops and a range of additional ride experiences designed to keep riders, supporters and families entertained on and off the bike.

The race programme will see youth racing take place on Saturday, with senior championship racing on Sunday, ensuring a weekend that celebrates the future and the pinnacle of British gravel cycling alike.

Set against classic Dumfries & Galloway scenery - rolling hills, remote landscapes and a deep-rooted outdoor culture - the British National Gravel Championships at Ae Forest promise an unforgettable weekend of racing, community and adventure.
